What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: I just got these results via email from my dr and don't know what it means. Can you help me?

Joint space: There is a moderate-sized knee joint effusion. Mild synovial
hypertrophy is present in the knee joint consistent with noninfectious
synovitis. There is a multiseptated 3.2 cm AP x 2.6 cm TR x 7.7 cm CC Baker's
cyst; this has significantly increased in size the prior study when it
measured 1.0 x 2.3 x 5.8 cm in similar dimensions.

Articular cartilage: There are partial-thickness cartilage defects in the
apex of the femoral trochlea and patella. Punctate partial-thickness cartilage
defects are also present along the weight-bearing surface of the lateral
tibial plateau. Partial-thickness gross defects are new from the prior study
of May 2011. The cartilage in the medial compartment of the knee is well
maintained.

Brief Answer:
You are having knee arthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. This report is showing that you are having osteoarthritis of the knee. It is a age relted condition. More common in obese person. It has these points.
1.There is accumulation of fluid in side knee joint.
2.There is increase thickening of synoviyum which is a layer of tissue to cover joints. Its thickness increase when there is inflammation.
3. There is a cyst in the back part of the knee, filled with joint fluid. You can feel it on back of your knee.
4.Our joint are lined by cartilage which makes over joint friction free. There is some damage to this cartilage also.
So all of these report finding suggesting that you have knee arthritis. You need to avoid squatting, cross leg sitting. You should take daily calcium and vitamin D3. Physiotherapy is also helpful
In late stages youmight need surgery. So discuss with your doctor and follow above mentioned advises.
Let me know if there is any other folowup questions.

Thank you for your answer. I've had this knee scoped three times prior...is there anything that can be done surgically now to eliminate the swelling. I'm walking with a limp and it's effecting my quality of life right now.

Also is there something that can be done with the damaged cartilage that you mentioned above?

Brief Answer:
Knee replacement is only good option

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If you have already done arthroscopy than there is only one option left. It is knee replacement surgery. You are young for this procedure as it is best for fifty years of age.
Still if there is too much pain and you are taking pain killers daily than it i better to opt for surgery as taking pain killers can cause kidney damage and high blood pressue.
I would recommend you to discuss these option with your doctor and than decide. I would forbid you to not to go for scopy or steroid shot as they are harmful.
Some patient can manage to delay knee surgery by doing life style modification and weight loss.
thanks
