Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Hi,
I recently had Physical examination ,followed by lab tests are done.In the lab results observed VItamin D and Vitamin B12 defeciencies.Below are the details
VITAMIN D,25-OH : 15
VITAMIN B12 : 318
HBA1C: 6.1
Physician prescribe me medicines to take ergocalciferol 50,000IU once a week for 3 months and regarding B12,she prescribed 1000mcg once per day for 3months.

1.Here i have a concern regarding my dosage, taking this high dosage ergocalciferol(Vitamin D2) and continuing for 3 months is suggestable? Is body able to resist or generate any side effects on organs.

2.Instead of continuing high dose of D2 50000IU once in a week, Is it better to continue small dose for each day throughout the week?If yes, please let me know the dosage.

3.Which one between Vitamin D2 and D3 is suggestable to take in my case?

4.Please let me know whether it is safe to take Vitamin D2 along with B12?
Requesting you to clarify above answers

Brief Answer:
the dose replacement depends on the blood level, yours is appropriate

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

(1 and 2)The dose of vitamin d replacement given depends on the level detected by the lab tests.

According to the recommendations, when the vit d is less than 25, 50 000 units is needed once OR more times a week for 6 to 8 weeks. It is then reduced to 800 to 1000 daily after this time period

Your level was 15, since this is less than 25, it is actually recommended that you use the 50 000 units at this time.
Since your level is lower than your body needs, using the replacement to help bring them up to normal values would not cause problems

It only becomes a problem if vit d levels become very elevated which is not likely if you use the prescribed dose.

(3)Vitamin d 3 is preferred because this is the more naturally occurring form.

(4)there are no interactions between vitamin b12 and d

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
