What Do My Ultrasound Scan Test Results Indicate?
Question: I just got records from ultrasound on my thyroid. It says , large solid heterogeneous nodule with internal vascularity measuring 2.8cm. My isthmus measures 1mm. Please an you tell me odds it being cancerous. It hurts to swollow some times. How likely is it to get life threatening cancer , I am 38 years old otherwise I'm awesome health. Have biopsy for next week.
Brief Answer:
possibility of cancer is there
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
I understand your concerns. This ultrasound report is suspicious for cancer. The nodule is solid, heterogeneous and 2.8 cm size, which point towards cancer.
However, the diagnosis of cancer requires needle aspiration or biopsy from the nodule. Until we have that, we can't be sure.
Even if it is cancer, surgery should be able to cure it. Results of treatment for thyroid cancer are extremely encouraging.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. I need to stop researching , however can you tell me how likely this form of cancer spreads ? I'm terrified of it being anplastic (?) cancer..
Brief Answer:
very unlikely to be anaplastic
Detailed Answer:
Anaplastic is a rare variant. In a female of your age, we seldom see anaplastic carcinoma.
Common variant is papillary, which can spread via lymph nodes but even then is often curable.

You are so kind to take time to put my mind at ease. One last question, what's the growth speed rate for papillary cancer ? Since my nodule is 2.8cm would it be likely to see that size grow larger in a months time ? Making sure how important it is to get a sooner biopsy appointment as mine won't be for a couple weeks. My appointment with specialist is on Monday but they will have to schudule my biopsy after seeing me which can take some time for availability. Thanks in advance , kind regards XXXXXXX
Brief Answer:
It grows slowly
Detailed Answer:
But still, if left untreated, if it is really cancer, it would grow in few months.
However, waiting couple of weeks for biopsy may not be too detrimental.
