What Do Red Pimples On The Body And Head Of An Infant Suggest?

Posted on Tue, 6 Oct 2015
Question: hi, my 8 month old son has had a scaly red, raised patch on his chest that has grown in size a lot over the past two weeks. he has recently developed red pimple like spots all over his body and head. he looks as if he's developing two more patches on his head. I took him to the pediatrician on Wednesday and she ruled out ezcema. I have been putting benadryl cream on it but nothing is helping. it seems a lot worse since this morning.

Brief Answer:
Can be folliculitis or keratosis pilaris.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
I have seen the attached images. Two possibilities which seem likely from the description are:
1) Folliculitis which is the inflammation of one or more hair follicles. The condition may occur anywhere on the skin.It starts when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing or blockage of the follicle.

2) Keratosis pilaris in which a protein in the skin called keratin forms hard plugs within hair follicles. It is characterized by Small bumps that look like "goose bumps" and the skin feels like sand paper or chicken skin.

You can use creams containing alpha-hydroxy, lactic or salicylic acid or urea after consulting a dermatologist. Topical steroid creams like hydrocortisone or topical retonoids like Retin A are also useful but should be used under medical guidance. Moisturizing lotions to soothe the skin and help it look better are also helpful.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

that would happen on a 8 month old baby? and the bumps are all over his body and face and scalp too.

Brief Answer:
Can be a post viral infection rash.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If it is all over his body then it can be erythema multiforme or a post viral infection rash. Just apply calamine lotion to soothe the rashes. It is likely to subside on its own in next 3-4 days. In case the rashes increase or turn more purple rather than red then do consult a pediatrician.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
Large spot is different from others.

Detailed Answer:
The large spot is likely to be different from the other spots. It needs to be kept well moisturized and in case it is actively increasing in size it needs a direct examination by a dermatologist for proper treatment.
Regards.
