What Do The Following Thyroid Profile Results Suggest?
Question: Had a thyroid test results as follows:
Thyroglobulin > 500
Free T4 12.1 pmol/L
TSH 5.23mIU/L
Free T3 4.8 pmol/L
Test result report noted " significantly elevated levels of thyroid autoantibodies are associated with autoimmune thyroid disease "
When I asked my Dr. about this he just said that I had an autoimmune disorder but didn't know what. Could this be related to my difficulty in losing weight. I am 67 years old and have been struggling to lose weight for the last 20 odd years.

Brief Answer:
Subclinical Hypothyroidism
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
I presume your Anti thyroglobulin ( anti TG) levels are > 500 ( not thyroglobulin). If that is the case, it indicates auto immune thyroid disease. TSH is just above normal and free T4 is on the low normal range, This is called as "Subclinical" hypothyroidism. It has been shown to be associated with weight gain and metabolic syndrome.
Not all subclinical hypothyroidism require treatment. But if you have a goiter, or a positive thyroid antibody test or abnormal cholesterol report, it is worth treating you with a small dose of thyroxine. It might improve your weight as well.
