What Do These Hba1c Levels Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: A1C a few weeks ago was 5.5, but fasting glucose was only 83. Last year's A1C was 5.4. Successfully treated for thyroid cancer last year. How can I have an A1C this high with a fasting glucose that low? I hadn't eaten anything before my bloodwork for more than 12 hours. I'm afraid I'll trend higher each year.

Brief Answer:
in normal range

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
The Hba1c test is expressed in a range and anything below 5.7% is normal. 5.7 to 6.4% is pre diabetes range and above 6,6% is diabetes range.

If you do it after 2-3 days it may be 5.3%.

So not to worry. As long as it is with in normal range, there is no need to worry.

I must say that, in thyroid cancer follow up, we use a higher dose of levothyroxine ( SYNTHROID) to keep your TSH supressed. This hiigh dose of levothyroxine can some times push your sugar levels slightly high. But this high dose of levothyroxine is essential for atleast 5 years after your surgery.

Binu
