Question: I suffer from hypothyroidism and PCOS and I'm currently on an Evra BC patch. Are my thyroid levels normal? I take Euthyrox 50.

Please keep in mind I've done this test while on the patch.

Brief Answer:
Yes,your thyroid test results are normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
I have gone through your question and understood your concern.

Ortho Evra is a contraceptive skin patch containing a combination of female hormones (ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin) that prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary).

I have see your test results.

Birth Control Pills can affect test.
Ninety-nine percent of T4 (one of the two thyroid hormones) should bind to little proteins called thyroxine-binding globulins (TBG) in the bloodstream, making it pretty much useless. Estrogen in oral contraceptives causes TBG to hang out in the body longer, increasing your body's level of TBG -- and a percentage of all T4 stuck to it.

Since the remaining 1 percent of "free" T4 is what affects your body, your thyroid gland should work to produce more T4 to keep enough of the hormone gallivanting around your body free from TBG.

But in patients who already have a thyroid condition(like you ) the thyroid can slack off, meaning you have to up your dosage of T4.

Answer:In your case you have normal thyroid test results.(TSh is normal and for this reason ,in my opinion you should not increase the dose of Euthyrox.

For that reason, when having your thyroid levels checked, i should opt for the THS test, not the T4 test. Your high T4 levels will give the false impression your thyroid is putting in double time.

My last advice:Do not smoke while using Ortho Evra because it can greatly increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack.

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
If you have other questions feel free and ask.I will be happy to help.
Take care.
