What Do These Lab Reports Indicate?
Ependymoma grade II tumor management
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, thanks for asking from HCM.
I can understand your concern. Your brother is suffering from Ependymoma tumor (grade II). It is located in his posterior fossa brain. After reading, I can say that his tumor has already been decompressed. Some information is lacking like
- What is the report of pre- and postoperative MRI brain?
- What is his clinical status?
Usual protocol for ependymoma is
- First do surgical safe resection or decompression as much as possible. Goal is to remove that much part which does not cause any deficit.
- After surgery and biopsy report, patient has to get an MRI brain. Based on MRI brain report, patient usually receives radiotherapy. Usual adult dose is 54cGy or it will depend upon treating oncologist.
- After radiotherapy completion, patient has to get another MRI brain after 6 months. It will tell the status of tumor.
- If there is residual tumor, patient might need another surgery.
- Chemotherapy is not good for ependymoma.
So your next step is to get MRI brain done and consult oncologist. If possible, send me his MRI reports, so that I can tell you about current tumor status.
Hope it will help you. If any doubts, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
Report interpretation
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, Welcome back.
The reports which you sent revealed that
- He is having a tumor of 4.6 x 3.3 cm size which has spread locally. Such kind of tumor can be excised upto 80-90% and rest part needs to be destroyed by radiotherapy.
- VP shunt has been done for hydrocephalus.
But it does not contain any information about
- surgical resection of tumor
- Any postoperative MRI brain to tell residual tumor.
These two informations are very vital. I need to know about surgical findings so that an idea can be taken about degree of tumor resection. The post op MRI will tell about current status of tumor and spread.
If possible send me these information. If no MRI brain was done yet, kindly get it done.
The blood investigations are normal.
Hope you got my point. If any doubts, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
