What Does PSA Of 0.036 Indicate?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Brief Answer:
Followup and considerations
Detailed Answer: XXXXXXX thanks for the question,
Technically with this test result this would not be described as undetectable. We need additional testing results over the next several months in order to fully declare whether or not this is a situation of undetectable PSA.
I would be interested to know what additional therapy you have been treated with including the radiation that you mentioned. I assume you may be on some type of androgen deprivation as well.
I will look forward to reviewing the additional information if you can provide that.
Sincerely,
Dr. G

Hello Dr. G. Thanks for your reply. I had total External Beam Radiation to the whole pelvic region in 42 fractions (sessions) that ended in early April, 2014. During this period, I also received Lupron injects plus Casodex. All hormonal treatments ended in late April, 2014. Here's my PSA history:
On April 28, my PSA was undetectable (<0.5).
On July 28th--my PSA was 0.11.
On August 21st--an ultrasensitive PSA was 0.036.
I am not scheduled for a PSA test until October 21st.
Thank you for any opinions and additional information you can provide.--XXXX

Brief Answer:
Considerations
Detailed Answer:
thank you for the additional information.
At this time I think it would be reasonable to wait until October to obtain a follow-up measurement of the PSA. sometimes laboratory testing can fluctuate and we can become confused if we test certain things to frequently. At this point I would rested sure that your doctors are performing appropriate follow-up in checking your PSA this coming October.
The obvious concern is that if your PSAT is rising your doctors may need to consider some type of additional therapy. At this point it would be very speculative to consider that this is actually going on.
It is important that your lab test is performed at a consistent laboratory setting. If your doctors have your test sent to the same laboratory it will usually help ensure that the test result is consistent and accurate.
it is a very exciting time in the field of prostate cancer management. We have gained new tools in the form of oral medications as well as additional chemotherapy options to treat prostate cancer. Hopefully you will not need any additional treatment for many many years if at all.
I would be happy to continue to follow along with you as your test results become available.
again please let me know if you have any additional specific concerns at this time.
Sincerely,
Dr. G

Dr. G: Thanks for your thoughtful answer and opinion. I would like to know what is the equivalent value of the ultrasensitive PSA value of 0.036 in Standard PSA testing terms?
Thanks, XXXX
Thanks, XXXX
Brief Answer:
Follow-up
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
At this time we have no laboratory standard which is able to make some type of equivalent measurement between ultrasensitive PSA and his standard PSA. In light of this, we need to wait more time to see if there is any trend in the direction of your PSA.
Sincerely,
Dr. G
