Question: thank u ...i am 40 years old female .i have been recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. tsh 8.30 ,T3 96 ,T4 6.7 .My blood test remark is Predominantly normocytic normocytic with macrocytes and ovalocytes
Brief Answer:
I would start on Thyroxine supplementation
Detailed Answer:
Hi.Thanks for writing on HCM.
High TSH with normal T3 and T4 values are suggestive of early stages of hypothyroidism. This indicates that the thyroid gland is slowly failing and requires thyroxine(T4) supplementation).
Do you have any symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, constipation?
Since the problem is confined to the gland per se I were to treat by supplementation of thyroxine hormone (start with low does 25ug) and then titre the dose according to the thyroid levels in the follow up at 2-3 months initially.
Normochromic means a normal color of the red blood cells.
Macrocytes (big) and ovalocytes (Oval shaped) are nothing but slightly altered shape of red blood cells which revert to normal after supplementation of the hormone (thyroxine) which is required for normal synthesis of these blood cells.
Another important cause that is vitamin B12 deficiency also presents with similar picture and I would rule out the same.
Hope this answers your query
