What Does A Lipoma On The Brain Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Jun 2014
Question: Hello,

For tinnitus I have had an MRI, MRA and ct scan.

The MRI/MRA showed a Lipoma on the brain. left side. IN the split between the left en right brain (I dont know the name ). I will attach some pictures of this Lipoma to this query.
The nurologist reassured me that this was nothing to worry about at all and I also never had symptoms of headache or seizures or what ever. Just never felt this.
the nurologist told me that it probably is there for long and even from birth and it just now found by accident. But its not the reason for my tinnitus. And she reassured me 100% that I don't have to be worried at all.
All blood vessels were normal. All other things were perfectly all right. I am also in perfect health.

I am scared a lot as I never expected this.

Does those lipoma's grow quickly so that I quickly will require surgery?
are they commonly founded on brain?
is it on a operable place if needed to be removed if it becomes big?
it it on a bad place of the brain?
is it genetic as my dad and mom has them but on body? (dont know if they have it on brain as they didnt have brain scans).
What is the medical name or kind of this Lipoma?
Do I have to worry this much? As I am really scared ?

Brief Answer:
Thereis no need to worry about lipoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your history and MRI brain findings.

First of all, I would like to reassure you that there is no need to worry about the lipoma in the brain.

I agree with your neurologist that the lipoma may have been there for long and is not the cause of tinnitus.

It is a benign tumor and it either does not grow or grows only very slowly.

This location is not bad and if needed, it can be easily removed by operation.

It is not genetic.

The medical term is lipoma itself.

There is no need to worry at all.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Oh thank you so much doctor for this message. I'm a dad of 2 lovely little daughters which I need to bring older in this life.. God bless your family.

So you agree based on the MRI picture that this is a lipoma?

Is the MRI/MRA diagnosis very proper for this? So if neuroradiologist says it's Lipoma then it's lipoma?

What's this location of this lipoma called in medical terms? It seems that I am lucky with this location then.

Did you see it often in patients ?

Do you recommend a periodic MRI? Or I just need to live my life and forget about it?

Kind regards,

Nayel

Brief Answer:
You can forget about it.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I am pleased to hear about your lovely little family and I am sure you are a great mom to your daughters.

I agree with your neurologist that it is a lipoma.

MRI/MRA is fine for this and no further tests are needed.

This location could be from falx cerebri (the tissue located between the two sides of brain) or from corpus callosum. (I needed all the scans to be 100% sure about the location).

I often see this in patients.

I would not recommend a periodic MRI. You just need to live your life and forget about it.

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)

Thanks doctor

Last question and maybe a stupid one

I have had anct scan mastoids which has lower radiation than a complete head scan.

Would this much of radiation not be risky for this lipoma to turn to cancer?

As I heard that if there is a mother mark ( birthmark) we need not to injure it as it can turn to cancer.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Lipoma would not turn to cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I have noted your concerns.

A single CT has very little risk of causing cancer. Also, lipoma would not turn into cancer.

Best wishes,
