What Does A Lump Above Ankle Indicate?
USG/ MRI of leg and aspiration cytology required.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
A lump above the ankle can be due to soft tissue or bony lesion.
However, a swelling which appears only on running, is painful and disappears on rest suggests one of the following possibilities:
1. Swelling on running suggests that it is associated with muscular activity.
2. Pain suggests that the lesion may be arising or associated with nerve.
A couple of investigations are required to know the exact nature of the lesion.
An ultrasound (USG)/ MRI of the leg is needed to assess the nature and extend of the lesion.
Besides USG/ MRI, an aspiration of the lesion also needs to be done.
In aspiration, the cellular material is aspirated using a needle, the material is spread on glass slide and material is stained with appropriate stains.
Aspiration cytology aids in knowing the origin and exact nature of cells in the lesion.
The lesion can be inflammatory, benign or malignant.
It may be arising from muscle, fibrous tissue, nerve or any other structure present in the leg.
Appropriate management can be instituted once diagnosis is made with above mentioned investigations.
