What Does A Persistent Pain In The Hips Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 May 2015
Question: For the past year probably I have had pain in my hip area. It is very dull, and almost feels like a stitch in my side. It does not do it too bad when I walk or move, I don't notice it. When I am sitting I feel it, or standing still. It is on the front right above my hip and circles around the side to my back, but just in the top of the hip area. I injured my ankle last year around Christmas, and sprained it badly. I never went and got it checked out, and just let it heal on its own. It still occasionally rolls and is very weak. I was getting sharp pain when I was getting up in that hip area after that, to the point that it made me stop moving. That has pretty much stopped. It only happens once a week maybe, but the dull achy feeling has been there for at least 6-9 months. I had an x-ray done on the area about a year ago and he said it was clear. He didn't think I needed an MRI or anything, and my complete blood panel came back good then, and came back good in February when I got checked on. Is this just muscular or what? Should I be worried about getting checked out further. My great uncle on my father's side died from bone cancer that started with pain in his hip so I am a little concerned.

Brief Answer:
long term pain needs evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have read your query.
I will advise you clinical examination and further investigation like MRI. If required you may need PET SCAN or CT scan.
long term pain can not be muscular.
hip pain can be due to cartilage injury which will be confirmed on MRI.
Till time take analgesic and neurotropic medication like methylcobalamine.
Physiotherapy like ultrasound and Tens may give you relief.

Should I be concerned about bone cancer?
It seems like from what I have read that if I was having pain from bone cancer then it would be much more severe. This is like a 1 or 2 on the pain scale, and that I would have other symptoms by now or it would have shown up in my February blood work. Correct?

It comes and goes. I won't feel it for a day or two and then I will sit funny or be in the right position I guess and then I will feel it

Brief Answer:
you should be concerned if you have other associated symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have read your query.
You should be concerned about cancer if you have associated constitutional symptoms like weight loss, anorexia, fever and severe pain.
Further investigation will help to rule out differential diagnosis.
Benign variety of tumour do not show up on blood test and they don't have severe pain as symptoms.
PET scan will help you in early diagnosis.
