What Does A Sudden Episode Of Cramps In Abdomen After Walking Indicate?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Sep 2015
Question: My wife is experiencing "muscle cramp" in her abdomen. She describes the pain as sharp.
She says the pain came on suddenly after a walk outside. She is 64 years old and is generally in good health, although she has a heart condition (Bundle Branch blockage) that has been stable for more than 10 years and has not caused her any problems.

We are wondering if we should go to an emergency room, Please advise.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Where is the pain located (upper left/right abdomen)? Does she have any nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, gas obstruction? Does she pas stool regularly? Has she had any abdominal surgeries before? What is her heart rate?

I`m looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards.

Wife says she is feeling better. Says she is currently without pain. Got out of bed
and walked from bedroom to living room and back. Took deep breaths and exhaled without any pain.

Pain was in central abdomen below breast bone. No vomiting or diarrhea.
Waves of nausea at the onset and a little bit of dizziness. All resolved now.
No constipation. No abdominal surgeries.

Pulse is 72.

I think we are okay. Wife suggests gas pain is probable culprit.
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Gallstones can be the case.

Detailed Answer:
This definitely is nothing serious. Her heart rate indicates that.
Such pain could be caused by rib nerve pain or gallstones. However gallstone pain radiates to back. Gas pain is possible as well.

I suggest her to have abdominal ultrasound done (this is NOT urgent) to rule out gallstones.

Regards.
