What Does A Thyroid Level Of 8.3 In A Child Indicate?
Question: Hi doctor
My daughter was derected with thyroid 8.3 at 22nd day of her birth.As per doc we started medication of thyrox (37.5 mg) per day. We have her blood test on 2nd april which was 0.67 tsh ,now she will complete her 2 months on 11th April.Doctor suggested us to continue with same medication and then they will see the progress, afterwards they will stop medication to see the body reaction as it is making the hormone itself or not.
We just want to have second opnion that we should continue the same medication and how many chances are there that my daughter will not continue the medication. As far aa her health graph is too good, her weight is 5.4 kgs, height 60 cms.

Treatment would be continued for at least 3years. Thereafter, the child would be evaluated after stopping the drugs for a while. If she carries on normally, then there is no reason to be worried and she can stay without medications. If she cannot, then she would need to be on drugs for the rest of her life. This is no terrible news because these medications are very safe.
The chances of getting off treatment depend on the initial findings. if the thyroid is clearly absent, then she might never get off drugs. If it were present, then chances are pretty good but not 100% that she can stay without requiring medications all her life.
