Question: Hello Doctor, I'm a newly married woman... I was taking XXXXXXX for a period of 3 months before marriage to avoid date issues on my wedding day ... there were no side-effects. I stopped XXXXXXX 1 month after my marriage since I started experiencing vision blurring & stuff but the periods were occuring on Normal dates with no menstrual cramps.. later I consulted my doc.. she prescribed much milder Femilon... started the 21-day course of Femilon... I took the 20th tablet on 30th September... but unfortunately forgot to take it on 1st october... so took the last tablet on 2nd October... now it is 5th day & I have still not got my periods... my husband is confident that I might not be pregnant... but I haven't got my periods yet... but there is slight stomach ache... I'm worried... pls suggest me something ! should I wait for another 2 days or should i go for a pregnancy test ?? really need your help.. kindly do the needful

Brief Answer:
Missing a pill not a concern, some investigations needed

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

The main question is on which day of the cycle did you start Femilon pills. You have to start these pills from the second day of the menses. If you have done so, you should get full protection from the pregnancy.

Even if you had missed a pill on 1st October, you have taken that additional pill on 2nd October; and it seems that it was the last pill of the pack. So it should not cause failure in the pills effect.

Usually, within 7 days after completing the hormonal pills of the pack, you should get menses. So you can afford to wait for a couple of days more. However, if you are fairly confident about your protection, you need not wait for the appearance of the menses. On seventh day start your next pack for continued protection. Then, if you want you can get urine pregnancy test done after one week.

Please give me following information:
Did you miss more than 3 pills during the whole cycle?
On which day of the menses did you start the Femilon pack?

I am a bit concerned about dimness of your vision during the XXXXXXX pills. Did you get your Blood pressure and fundoscopy (examination of nervous membrane of the eye) examined? If not please get these investigations done. Then we can decide whether you should continue on the birth control pills or you have to shift to any other method.

Please give me all this information for having more clear picture. Till that, you may follow my advice as mentioned above.

For any more information or doubts, I am always available for you madam.

i consulted my doc in order to eliminate sudden doubt of me being pregnant... due to some other commitment, i couldn't visit my doctor on the 2nd day of my period occurance... i visited her on 4th day of my periods... so i started the pill on the 4th day of my menses.. i.e., 11th September... .. i got my Blood pressure checked and it was 130/90.. probably due to stress for personal reasons... I didn't miss any of the pills... except one pill that i was supposed to take on the 1st of October... which I took on 2nd Oct...

I think i can not continue femilon dosage again because i guess my body isn't getting accustomed to it ... im also worried about the problems that may occur if i am willing to concieve in 1 and a half year's time !
Please suggest me the safest way to rid conception please..

Brief Answer:
Wait for few days more

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

What assurance of protection from pregnancy can be given if the pills are started on 2nd day of menses in the first cycle may not be that complete if you have started them on 4th day. We have to keep the fingers crossed. Chances are more that you would not be pregnant. I would advice you wait for two more days for the menses. If you do not get them then you have to find out whether you are pregnant or not. Immediate pregnancy test may not give you reliable results. You have to wait for at least one week. However, if you perform beta hCG test, you can get reliable results even so early also.

If you are indeed not comfortable with oral birth control pills, had blurring of vision and BP 130/90 at such a young age, you may opt for some other birth control method. The most convenient methods today are condom and intrauterine device. Intrauterine device should be quite hassle free for you and will give you continued on going protection from pregnancy for many years to come. This will take away your stress also. However, before getting intrauterine device like CuT inserted, you have to undergo internal clinical examination to find out that it will suit you. Any pathology in the uterus is not good for these devices. So please visit your Gynaecologist for check up and the advice.

Well, your pregnancy is not confirmed as yet, and still you are keen to know about the safer methods for termination of pregnancy. :) Up to 9 weeks, the pregnancy can very safely be terminated by medicines named Mifepristone and Misoprostol. However, they are not over the counter medicines. You should get them by Obstetrician's prescription and follow up with him/her.

Do not panic Madam, panic always makes one take wrong decisions. Wait patiently. Get the pregnancy diagnosis done. Then if pregnancy is there, handle that problem and then switch over to the preferred method of birth control. If you are not pregnant (which is more likely) switch over to another contraceptive method.

I hope I have provided you the necessary advice with required relevant information. If you are satisfied, you may post a good review with 5 stars rating for me.

For any more information or medical advice, I always stand for you at Health Care Maagic, Madam.
