Brief Answer:
Altered mental state...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through the medical history of your niece and feel sorry for the situation she is in.
Being diagnosed as psychotic ("psychosis") means that the mental state of your niece has been altered. She is closed inside "her own world", where her thoughts, beliefs, hearing and seeing are totally different from the reality (real life).
There are many causes to psychosis, including use of illicit drugs, alcohol, brain infections, dementia "Alzheimer" disease, etc.
The treatment (cure) depends on the underlying cause. Once the cause is corrected, then, there are good chances to get improvement of symptoms. Furthermore, anti-psychotic drugs will be used only for short term until the totally corrected causes.
Hope it was of help! Let me know if you need further clarifications!

Thank You Dr. you explained it well. The courts took her children last week and the Dr she was seeing said she was psychotic and not able to go to trial to try and get her two children back as she didn't understand what was going on. On top of all that her 9 year old son who is so very sweet is autistic. Their daddy was awarded custody so all is fine with the children. I just wanted to be clear on just what that word psychotic meant. Thank you for your time and you well explained answer.
