What Does Bruising Along Stomach Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 30 Sep 2014
Question: My husband has bruising on his side that keeps getting bigger. It is reddish in color and has now spread all along his belly about 8 to 9 inches wide and extends around to most of his back and up to his chest under his left side. He also has a long bump that goes from his middle back around his left side to almost his belly button (It feels like a muscle). This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. I am getting worried. It is not getting better. It is getting worse. I think he has bleeding going on somewhere. How can I convince him to see the Doctor. What do you think it could be.

Brief Answer:
It can be haematoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,XXXX

Welcome to healthcare magic.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar.

After going through your query I think your husband has got large haematoma across his back and up to belly button.

I has three question for you

1. whether he got injured. Please tell me mode of injury

2. whether he is having fever or not .

3.How it feels fluid or solid.

If he got this after a injury and he has no fever, then no need to worry much.Hematoma gradually resolved by itself .Thrombophob gel local application three times a day over it(no rubbing) can help in resolving it.

But you are worried because three weeks has passed.
Your worry is real. Subcutaneous hematoma gets color changes in there natural course of their evolution and may take longer time

Sometimes haematoma does not resolve by themselves. In these cases aspiration with wide bore needle is done to suck the collected blood under aseptic condition for which you need to visit doctor.

Ultrasound abdomen will be helpful to establish the diagnosis and to exclude other causes.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.

Take care

He drives school bus and did fall down the stairs hard and hit the left side of his body. He seen the Doctor when he heard a popping sound. They thought his muscles moved his rib bone back in place and would just be sore. A few weeks later, this appeared when he turned wrong while twisting around. The long bump feels solid. It stays in one spot though. He does not have a fever.
Thank-you. XXXXXXX
