Question: I had an esbl pylonefritis in october and tests show im still colonized... Mrsa is considered cleared after a yr of no infections.... Is it the same for esbl?
Brief Answer:
esbl uti
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
MRSA is a type of bacteria ( Methicillin resistant Staph Aureus ). If it is not there now in the urine it is good as it is a very notorious bacteria.
ESBL- Extended spectrum beta lactamase is a characteristic of the bacteria. ESBL in itself is not a bacteria. So it can be ESBL producing E Coli, or ESBL producing Klebsiella. Over all if a bacteria is producing ESBL , it will be resistent to many antibiotics and will be difficult to treat.
Colonized- means that a bacteria is present but not causing infection ( Damage).
Colonization is not common in esbl producing bacteria in urine. Why do you say colonization- are the bacteria isolated in culture ?
So we need to differenciate between colonization and infection. If you are having burning sensation in urine +/- fever with puscells in urine then we call it as UTI.
if there is colonization - we cannot treat it but we have to ensure personal hygiene.

The culture came back with it but the straight XXXXXXX was negative so they thoug it was just part of the normal flora since i had eslb producing klebsiella before with plyonefritis
Brief Answer:
UTI
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Its good that you don't have any infection.
You just have to watch-out for the symptoms of Urinary tract Infection (UTI) like burning sensation in urine, frequency of urination and fever. In case you have such symptoms you should get a urine routine examination and culture test done.
best wishes
