What Does Elevated Liver Enzymes Indicate?
Question: What could an elevated GGT (49) and SGPT(43) mean? I am nearly 60 , female and overweight. ( One metre 60 height and 79 kilos weight)I have been taking LIPEND (red rice casules) to lower cholesterol which I understand work more or less like statin. I have had elevated liver enzymes with ( chemical)statins before
Brief Answer:
GGT is normal and SGPT is just above
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Your GGT value is within normal range as up to 51 is taken normal. SGPT value up to 40 is taken as normal.
Yours is 43 so no need to worry it will be seen in people with high cholesterol and overweight. But it is not significant raise to do any treatment.
Just control cholesterol level and reduce weight. Repeat test after 6 months. If increasing then liver protective drugs may be started.
Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Thank you very much for the answer which has set my mind at ease doctor. My GP here is also not very worried and has changed my cholesterol lowering medication in an effort to bering it down. I do have some twinges though which may or may not be connected to liver inflammation. Would it be a good idea to have an ultrasound or should I just forget it and go on a diet and exercise programme more consistently and seriously and recheck in 6 months as you suggest?

Brief Answer:
ultrasound doesn't change the treatment option
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
If you are having pain abdomen often, then get ultrasound abdomen. Otherwise in ultrasound you may get a fatty liver change (less likely) which doesn't change the treatment. Usually ultrasound will come normal. Treatment will be focused on reduction of cholesterol and diet and exercise.
So if no pain abdomen is there , then no need for ultrasound. You may get tests repeated after 6 months.
