What Does Foamy Urine Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Aug 2017
Question: Hello Sir,

I am concerned about foams in my urine since last 7 years. Urine Normal test is normal. KFT and Abdoman Ultrasound is normal. (All done in April 2017)

This foam is getting thicker and thicker day by day.

I am a diabetic since 2011 , though under control most of the times with HB1Ac below 6.

I have read one article in that foamy urine is a very early sign of kidney failure.

Please help me find the root cause of this.

I am also worried how to prevent kidney disease when a person is diabetic. I have heard that DM2 ultimately lead to Kidney Failure sooner or later.

Looking forward to your detailed response.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
foamy urine can be because of protein in urine

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Foamy urine generally is taken as a sign of protein in urine.

Diabetes leads to kidney disease in 50% of patients. most early changes for the same are protein in urine.

So the question that do you have kidney disease already-- well you have to check-
1. serum creatinine
2. 24hrs urine protein creatinine ratio.

if these 2 tests are normal then you probably do not have kidney disease.

now question is how you can prevent it-
1. good bp control <130/90
2. less salt intake
3. no tobacco products
4. good sugar control.

well but if the reports are abnormal please meet nephrologist in OPD for detailed evaluation.

best wishes.

Thank you sir for the response. I have few more questions:

1. 24hrs urine protein creatinine ratio. => How to get this test done? What do I say in Lab?

2. Is Urine Microscopy not sufficient to detect proteins?

3. How to find the exact use of cause behind the foamy urine? Please help me with the details on it.

4. Will Dm2 medicines cause impact to Kidneys? If yes, how to prevent it.

5. How to be doubly sure as of now that Kidneys are working as normal?

6. How to improve the Kindey health to ensure that they do not fall into damage trap? Are there any multi vitamins for them?

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Tests are important urine microscopy not enough

Detailed Answer:
you can show the name of the test at the testing lab. they will understand it and do it for you.

the exact cause of frothing can be found only after these tests.

these tesrs are needed to know if your kidney is working ok . serum creatinine is the most important test in that regard.

there are no vitamins for kidney

medicines and diet will depend on the result of these tests.

best wishes
