What Does Greenish Mucous Discharge When Suffering From Fever And Cold Indicate?
Question: My niece is suffering from Cough and cold from 7 days. Two days ago green color material was coming with cough. So we started ascoril plus. But she did not get relief with this medicine.Now light green color sticky material is not coming with cough. Doctor when she coughs then it feels that something has been stuck in the throat. It may be the light green color sticky material that is not coming out. Mostly she coughs while sleeping.Today she is also suffering from Fever. Her fever is 100 degree. For fever we are using paracetamol syrup.
Doctor is it the Ascoril Plus that is elevating or increasing the cough or is it the right medicine for cough. Should we continue with the same? Doctor please suggest the best treatment or medicine for this problem so that she can sleep easily in the night

Hi....its very common for greenish mucoid secretions to come while a kid is recovering from viral illness.
Cough and cold are viral 95% of the times in children. For cold you can use anti-allergics like cetirizine and for nose block, saline nasal decongestants will do. Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (max ceiling dose 500mg) every 4-6th hourly, that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.
For cold you can use Cetrizine at 0.25mg/kg/dose every 12 hourly for 3 days.
For nasal block, plain saline nasal drops will do, every 4-6th hourly to relive nasal congestion.
If cough is really bad...I suggest Promethazine... But its a prescription drug.
