What Does High Creatinine Level Indicate ?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: I am being treated for Hypertension and high Cholesterol. I was on
Fenolip (145), Ecosporin (75) and Losartan (25) for a year till Dec 2013. Though my BP and Cholesterol levels came within range, Potassium went up to 6.0 and Creatinine to 1.4 (Feb 2014). Thereafter I ws referred to a Nephrologist nd did scans of abdomen, Echo, ECG etc - he changed the Losartan to Cilacar (10) and added Atorva (10), raised the Ecosporin to 150. The Fenolip is continuing. He had asked me to check Potassium, Sodium & Creatininte after 8 weeks. I did that today and while Sodium is OK and Potassium is at 5.1 Creatinine is up at 2.6 ! What does this high Creatine indicate ?

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,

Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

I have read your detailed clinical history. You have a chronic kidney disease which is causing the high creatinine and potassium levels.

serum creatinine is a marker of renal function. when the kidney function deteriorates, the creatinine levels start rising. the kidney is then unable to excrete potassium from the body. This lead to high potassium levels.

The high BP can be the cause and also the effect of the chronic kidney disease.

Further action:

We need to perform a ultrasound KUB to know the kidney size. We also need to perform serum calcium, phosphorus, uric acid levels, parathormone levels, haemoglobin levels, iron studies, vitamin d 3 levels. This will help us to know how severe is your kidney disease and what more needs to be added.

I would suggest you to take losartan over cilacar as it prevents renal deterioration.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker
