Question: Quick question - my PSA went from 1.7 to 2.76 over a years time, my urologist did a DRE and said there is small, slight, subtle bump (for lack of another term) and that I should have a biopsy...said that its not hard etc...just slightly irregular...should I be concerned.

Brief Answer:
PSA levels alone might be misleading . Too early to worry

Detailed Answer:
hi and thanks for the query

I understand this can be disturbing . interpretation of PSA levels should always be done in correlation to the clinical signs and symptoms that you present with. it might be interesting to know if you have been having signs like frequent urination or urinary retention or lower back pain lately. increased PSA levels in this context can be of great concern. elsewhere a change in the structure and nature of the prostate after a DRE with a rising PSA can prompt a biopsy to be done as your doctor rightly thought in my opinion. It is also important to note however that there are conditions that can cause changes in measured blood PSA levels. I do not think a rise in PSA evels on its own should cause any panic. however if other signs like urinary problems or changes in the texture and size of the prostate are noticed , it is good practice in my opinion to do a biopsy.

for now no worries. thanks and kind regards as I wish you the best of health.
