What Does Loud Crackling Sound In The Ear Post Stapedectomy Surgery Indicate?
Question: Hi
I had a stapedectomy on my right ear 3 weeks ago and have started experience a loud crackling sound in my operated ear every time I swallow or yawn, similar to the sounds of a broken speaker. This came about as a result of me blowing my nose gently. I am now concerned I have dislodged the prothesis? My hearing is returning every day and I am
not experience any dizziness, however is it possible that I have moved the prothesis and this is the sound I am hearing? I am not experiencing any pain though the loud crackling noise is very disconcerting.

Brief Answer:
PTA. Inform your surgeon.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. Get a PTA done.
2. Inform your surgeon who an examine the ear and do tuning fork tests.
3. You may be experiencing distortion in hearing which can happen due to a displaced prosthesis, hypermobile ossicles, a perilymph leak or middle ear pressure differentials.
4. Absence of dizziness and improving hearing is a good sign.
5. The normal healing period is 4 to 6 weeks. Hence unless the PTA shows a different pattern than expected, it is better to wait and watch.
6. Upload your PTA to discuss further treatment options.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
