What Does "microcalcifications Throughout Myometrium" Mean?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Oct 2014
Question: I'm 37. While recently hospitalized for an unrelated condition, CT scan and vaginal ultrasound found a 2cm x 1.5cm cyst with septations on left ovary. Also found microcalcifications throughout myometrium. I'm on the nuvaring and for the past 4 months have had irregular bleeding and pain on left side that I'd dismissed as unimportant. I've lost 60 pounds this year, unexplained, other than I haven't been as hungry and when I eat, it doesn't take much to fill me up. My right tube was previously removed due to ectopic. My mother had a full hysterectomy in her late 30's due to polyps and cysts. I saw gyno yesterday for annual and they scheduled me for an ultrasound again. I didn't tell him about weight loss as I didn't relate them to this and didn't tell him about my mom. Soonest they could get me in is November 4th. I'm concerned this is too long. Thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Not a malignant cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The finding of an ovarian cyst causes considerable anxiety to women because of the fear of malignancy, but the vast majority are benign. You have a small cyst in the ovary with internal septations. The microcalcifications in myometrium is an age related degenerative change which is benign.
There are no projections, papillae or solid components in the cyst. These characteristics are classic of malignant cysts, and are absent in your case. There is no ascites, nor any signs or symptoms of malignancy that you are having.
You can get your serum CA 125 levels evaluated and in case the levels are elevated you can request for an earlier appointment.
