What Does My EKG Test Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I had an EKG done on my 10 year old daughter because she is a swimmer and a runner. The results show low right atrial rhythm and low voltage QRS. My doctor isn't in until Monday to discuss it and I am so worried. She is healthy with no symptoms. Could this be a false positive or improper lead placement? I am a pediatric nurse. I would love an answer from a pediatric cardiologist. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Please upload the image of the ECG

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I understand your concern. Please do not worry. A completely asymptomatic child will not have anything serious. Low voltage QRS Complex alone and the low right atrial rhythm do not mean anything without any symptoms at all.

I am a pediatrician with special interest in Pulmonology. If it is ok for you please upload the image of the ECG and I will get back right to you.

Thank you, they only gave me the report. I wish I had the actual EKG. If I get it, I will upload it. She is totally fine and swims and runs without a problem. I worry, because I know some athletes die with no history of symptoms. My daughter is not overweight and has no other medical history. I worry more because she is adopted from China so I have no medical history. Do you think it could have maybe been improper lead placement? What are some diagnoses for low voltage QRS?

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on ECG

Detailed Answer:
Hi....I do not think it is due to improper lead placement.

Some of the causes of low voltage QRS complexes could be - obesity (which is ruled out in your daughter's case), myxedema, scleroderma, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, pleural or pericardial effusion.

Please do not worry after going through the differentials.

An asymptomatic active child is a well child.
