How Should Carotid Arteries Calcification, Altered Diastolic Function, Pericardial Effusion Be Treated?

Hi Dr.My Aunty 70yrs old is having right side facial numbness and paralysis like symptoms. She is able to talk properly. But has been forgetting things and feeling weak. I performed an ultrasound study on and noted calcified plaque in both common carotid arteries and 2d echo study revealed altered diastolic function of LV and mild pericardial effusion. What can be done next?

Hello,

It seems she has stroke leading to one-sided (right) facial weakness and limb paralysis (Ischaemic stroke).

Calcified plaque in carotids indicates advanced atherosclerosis.LV diastolic dysfunction is age-related.

Mild pericardial effusion needs exclusion of Hypothyroidism. Go for serum Free T3, Free T4 & TSH and serum lipid profile, Blood sugar fasting and post-prandial, BUN, serum creatinine, serum electrolytes, complete blood count, urinalysis as work-up for stroke. MRI brain(plain) needs to be done to delineate infarct. Treatment follows after workup is complete.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
