What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?
Question: Hello,
I twisted my knee a week back while playing badminton. I visited the doctor & he advised X-Ray & MRI. While the X-Ray reports were completely normal, MRI report is following:
-Linear FS PD and STIR hyperintensity perpendicular to tibial plateau and long axis of meniscus noted in the anterior aspect of body of lateral meniscus
- Linear horizontal FS PD hyperintensity parallel to tibial plateau noted in the anterior and posterior horns of lateral meniscus
- Mild joint effusion noted
- Radial tear in the anterior aspect of the body with horizontal tears involving anterior and posterior horns of lateral meniscus - complex tear
(Other aspects in the report were normal so omitting it here)
I would like your advise on this MRI report. Is surgery needed at all or will the tear heal on its own. Is there a non-surgical way to heal this tear? I am 34 years old male and play badminton for leisure and fitness and would like to continue playing if it does not cause any major issues.
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Needs repair
Detailed Answer:
Hi there.
Thanks for the query.
You have meniscus cartilage tear. This can occur while playing badminton or other sports involving pivoting activities.
If you have pain on climbing stairs or cross leg sitting, it is best to get the tear repaired by Sports Medicine Arthroscopic specialist.
Without repair you will have unremitting pain.
I hope I have answered your query.
I will be available to you answer your follow up queries.
