What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

Question: Hi,, My HB is 11.7, HCT 38.9, RBC 6.07, MCV 64.2, MCH 19.3, MCHC 30.1, RDW-CV 17.1, Eosinophils 9.1, TSH 16.43 and Bilirubin, Serum 1.57. Other results (including Iron at 129) are normal. Do I need iron or some other supplements ? I am a 58 year old male. Thanks.

Thanks for your query. I am Dr Jyothi BL, Pathologist and I will be answering your query
Based on your query and reports, my opinion is as follows
1. Hemoglobin and parameters related to RBC ( red cell indices) are below normal range. All these indicate that you are anemic.
2. RDW is also deranged, that means you are having microcytic anemia.
3. Bilirubin is in normal range.
4. TSH is high, get a complete thyroid workup done.
5. You need to get a peripheral smear examination done to know the type of anemia.
6.For now iron supplements would suffice to manage anemia.
7.However do get a reticulocyte count done after a month of starting treatment to know if you are responding to treatment.
