What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: Hi I have already asked a doctor this question but because of my anxiety I am basically anxious because of something I read about T3 on the internet. I had seven eighths of my thyroid gland removed twenty years ago and have been on thyroxin ONLY since then..NO other thyroid hormones.
My T4 is presently 19...3 marks beneath the 22 XXXXXXX range
My T3 was under 2 and docs said it was low...think the range starts over 3..I took Lyothyonine 20mcg for just a week and was it coincidental or not but the next blood test showed T3 had come up to 2.8, which is still slightly under.
I was taking Lithium for four months only from March - August...have been completely off it now for 2 whole months....was wondering was it the lithium that caused this as I docs in twenty years have not mentioned that T3 levels were ever low.
Basically I have SEVEREST of anxieties and miserable bad depression. I ruminate about everything and have severe obsesional thinking.
SHOULD I BE WORRIED about taking the Lyothyonine? it is just that it is a new hormone to me and I AM worried...at the end of the day it is not going to harm me, but was just wondering if the sliver of gland I have left is ABLE to produce T3 itself or is it the case that because I need thyroxin that I also now need T3....I am VERY depressed and concentration is NIL, anxiety SEVERE....DO YOU THINK I SHOULD BE TAKING LYOTHYONINE AS PRESCRIBED? your thoughts much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
T3 supplementation not required

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted the history.
Sorry to hear about your problems.
There are no recommondations regarding the use of T3 .
Levothyroxine ( t4) supplement is favoured over T3 supplement. Body converts T4 to T3 based on the requirements. Even the intact thyroid gland produce 80% T4 and only about 20% of T3. Most of the T4 is then converted by body to T3.

Lithium affect the secretion of thyroid hormones by the body.

In your case, the left over in situ thyroid gland may be producing both T4 and T3 but that may not be sufficient to meet the body's requirements. The levothyroxine ( t4) which you take will be converted to T3 as and when required. So not to worry.

Binu
