What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Sun, 12 Mar 2017
Question: I am a 61 year old male.....physical in january revealed excellent blood work (181 chl., low triglycerides ,BP 100/65), etc.).

Three years ago my FBG was 113.....i have since maintained a rigorous running routine, lowered my carb/sugar intake, and kept a daily log of my FBG and periodic postprandial readings.

Almost without exception, my average FBG is around 92......but lately (off and on for 2 months), I've been getting readings of 99-105 for my FBG's. Should I be worried about this spike and consult my PCP?

I am VERY adverse to taking ANY meds.....but if something like Metformin is indicated, I will grudgingly accept this......as far as I know there is no history of diabetes in my family, for what that's worth....

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Confirm the results laboratorically;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
During the last decades the normal ranges of the fasting blood glucose levels are lowered and the latest recommended by Amarican Diabetes Association are under 100 mg/ dl.
So fasting glucose levels 105 mg/ dl are suggestive for prediabetes.
Anyway, it should be confirmed laboratorically, as glucometers can give fals results ( +/- 25 mg/ dl).
So i would recommend to check fasting blood sugar, postprandial and a HbA1c level in a venous sample in laboratory.
If prediabetes is confirmed and you think that diet and physical activity can not be modified anymore, than your treating physician may recommend oral antidiabetics tablets.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
