What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?
I went in for my 20 week anamoly scan for baby #2 today.. the sonographer found two EIF in both ventricles of the heart...she said it might be a soft marker for downs syndrome...at my 3rd month check my blood test came low risk with a 1:100000 for downs and nhs was normal with nasal bone present...should i be worried? Is there any other blood test i can do other than aminio?
You can discuss quad screen test with your doctor
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
Thanks for writing in to us.
The echogenic foci in ventricles are not always a serious concern and they are soft markers which means that it is not significant in itself but can be visualised in many conditions.
If the 3rd month risk for Downs came low then there is rare chance that it will occur.
However the recent maternal blood test that can be done is the quad screen test which measures 4 variables and gives a combined risk estimation between 15 weeks and 20 weeks 6 days.
It will measure the following
1. AFP: alpha-fetoprotein is a protein that is produced by the fetus
2. hCG: human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced within the placenta
3. Estriol: estriol is an estrogen produced by both the fetus and the placenta
4. Inhibin-A: inhibin-A is a protein produced by the placenta and ovaries
The inhibin is a better marker and therefore you can discuss this test with your doctor and get it done for peace of mind.
Regards,
Welcome and wish you good health
