Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: I had endoscopy last week, doctor sent out biopsies. Status of endoscopy are: Normal Duodenum, irregular Z line in the gastroesophageal junction (biopsied), Erythema in the Antrum compatible with gastritis. I am a 58 year old male with acid reflux and having esophageal spasms. What possibly is he looking for? And what is an irregular Z line?

Brief Answer:
typical stomach pathologies are looking for

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
Gastroscopy is used to verify benign, malignant and other stomach disorders.

It includes biopsy of typical stomach areas and biopsy of suspected stomach lesions, visualization of whole stomach and duodenum.

The procedure looks for signs of gastritis, hernia or ulcer.

Biopsy will show us if these samples are normal stomach mucosa or malignant changes and it will show us presence of helicobacter pylori and gastritis/GERD.

Z line is junction of esophagus and stomach and it is typically biopsied during gastroscopy since this area can show malignant alteration occasionally. An irregular line means that this junction isn't geometrically circled.

But irregularity is common sign and isn't meaning anything pathological in most cases so you don't have to be worried, but fundal findings will exclude any malignancy.

Wish you good health. Regards
