Posted on Fri, 18 Dec 2015
Question: My Ct LD Lung CA Screening States: " Extensive bullous and centrilobular emphysematous change is present from the lung apices through the bases. NO MASS, INFILTRATE, or EFFUSION is seen. No signicant mediastinal or hilar adenopathy is seen. Images through the upper abdomen demonstrate a left lobe hepatic lesion measuring 1.4 cm. in diameter with a density within the range of a simple cyst. The upper abdomen is othwise unremarkable." IMPRESSION " Extensive emphysematous change. No evidence for malignancy."

Is this good, bad, or worrisome? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You may need conservative treatment only.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your findings may indicate emphysematous changes in lungs.
It is evident by marked hyperexpansion of lungs with irreversible dilatation of alveoli.
Emphysema is a chronic disease of lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath. In emphysema, lung tissues that are necessary to support the physical shape and function of lung are damaged.
It may be due to many causes like cigarette smoking,alpha-1-antitrypsin, airway hyper reactivity, hereditary etc.

Its treatment is conservative in the form of bronchodilators, steriod, antibiotics etc.

Your finding also suggests a small simple liver cyst.
It is generally an age related developmental findings.
Generally this condition doesn't require any treatment. It may only require follow up ultrasound.
Surgical intervention is only required if there is pain, infection, increase in size etc.
At present,I only advise for follow up ultrasound if you are asymptomatic.
This is usually not a serious finding.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your query.
Further queries are most welcome.
