What Does My Radiology Test Report Indicate?

Question: Had emergency gallbladder removed in April 2017. Saw radiology's report said : scattered calcifications liver and spleen suggests old granulomatous disease. Sounds frightening. What is it?

Granuloma means-a mass of granulation tissue, typically produced in response to infection, inflammation, or the presence of a foreign substance.Granuloma is an inflammation found in many diseases. It is a collection of immune cells known as histiocytes (macrophages).Granulomas form when the immune system attempts to wall off substances it perceives as foreign but is unable to eliminate. Such substances include infectious organisms including bacteria and fungi, as well as other materials such as keratin and suture fragments.Now as granulomas are already there in spleen etc this means that infectitous agent is there well trapped inside it.
So unless you are symptomatic no further treatment is adviced.

So to sum up.
Granulomas are masses of immune cells that form at sites of infection or inflammation.They are natural way by which body counters infection.
