What Does My Sigmoidoscopy Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Sep 2016
Question: My fiancée had an EGD and a colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy a couple days ago. The results were not what we hoped for. He has another apt scheduled in about a week but we have so many questions now. I have his paperwork with me. I would like to have a couple things explained in layman's terms. On the colonoscopy/ flexible sigmoidoscopy they found 2, 16mm broadbased polyps in the mid transverse colon. A polypectomy performed with hot snare 40/20w. polyps retrived. histology pending. 6 endoclips deployed at the base, 3 clips on each polyp site. A large rectal mass extending 3 cm, 1 cm from anal verge, non obstructing, occupying more than 50% of circumference, biopsies taken. It says he needs an mri of pelvis. And next- the findings were a hiatal hernia, z line at 42 cm, extending 2-3 cm, with mucosal islands of salmon colored mucosa, biopsies taken. mosaic pattern mucosa seen in the gastric body, antral and random gastric body biopsies obtained. normal duodenal mucosa, biopsies obtained. Said may need ultrasound liver because of mosaic mucosa of the gastric body as outpatient. I have blood work (CBC) that was performed almost a month ago, as well as pictures from the procedures that was provided.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

I shall explain the report as below

---2, 16mm broadbased polyps in the mid transverse colon. A polypectomy performed with hot snare 40/20w. polyps retrived. histology pending. 6 endoclips deployed at the base, 3 clips on each polyp site.

===Polyp is a small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon. A pendulum like growth. Most of times these polyps are not cancerous hence can be removed once they are visualized. The endoclips are used to prevent bleeding once they are cut. A small chunk of the polyp will be sent for microscopic testing which is called histology to ascertain that it is not cancerous.

----A large rectal mass extending 3 cm, 1 cm from anal verge, non obstructing, occupying more than 50% of circumference, biopsies taken. It says he needs an mri of pelvis.

== This seems like a tumor, a irregular non defined growth. This could be cancerous hence, removal at finding is not an option. A small chunk of it is sent for histology test. The treatment depends on the histology finding. MRI is to see whether the tumor has spread to local structures.

----hiatal hernia, z line at 42 cm, extending 2-3 cm, with mucosal islands of salmon colored mucosa, biopsies taken. mosaic pattern mucosa seen in the gastric body, antral and random gastric body biopsies obtained.

=== Hiatal hernia is in where a part of the stomach slides up into the chest cavity, past the diaphragm. This can lead to some changes in the lining and structure of the parts went sliding. These changes are again tested under microscope to rule out any defective changes like cancerous changes.

Hope, I answered your query.

Wish you good health.
