What Does My Ultrasound Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: I had an ultrasound which found a 2.4 cm mass that is both solid and liquid. There is increased vascularity but all of my blood work for the t-levels were normal. I'm so scared that it's cancer. What are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
It seems like you may have inadvertently omitted the name of the organ which was ultrasound-ed.

Presuming it was the thyroid, then I will share one scientific fact with you that may likely allay your anxiety.

92 to 95% of thyroid nodules are not cancer.

Nodules are more common in women than men. (And also occur more frequently as we grow older)

Knowing this will likely make you feel better.

That being said, it is still worthwhile undergoing a systematic evaluation for this condition.

Apart from a detailed history and a thorough physical examination, the typical next step is a fine needle biopsy which I see you are scheduled for.

Biopsy will give a fair idea as to the type of cells present in this lump
