What Does My Ultrasound Test Report Indicate?

Question: My husband had a sonogram on his prostate because his PSA level was 5.5.
The results indicate it is 50 g and only 5 CC post void residue. Is this normal? He is 62 years old and otherwise in good health.

Brief Answer:
Prostate enlarged without significant obstruction
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
The average normal prostate volume in 62 year old man is 35 gm. So there is some enlargement of the prostate. However there is no significant obstruction to the flow of urine as his residual urine is only 5 cc. His PSA is a little high and you could discuss whether a biopsy of the prostate is required or not with his urologist.

Do you think a second PSA test would be appropriate? His blood test that came back was routine--not looking specifically for PSA level. We had sex that day and am wondering if his level elevated as a result of that.
Brief Answer:
Yes
Detailed Answer:
PSA should not be checked within 72 hours of sexual activity. So it may be advisable to recheck. Also do both total and free PSA as the ratio between the two is also important.
