What Does Persistent Rectal Discharge Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: I have rectal discharge daily now. I know the discharge is coming from somewhere in my right buttcheek. I can drain it by putting pressure on it (sitting down, pressing down on it or stretching the gluteus) and it will come out as mucous. Sometimes it is painful on my right buttcheek when I sit down. I work out often and I have noticed there is more mucous after a workout. This has gone on for three years now but not as frequently as it is now. My doctor set me up for a colonoscopy but I don't know if I should go through with it because it does not seem necessary as I am 29 years old with no history or blood in my stool .PLease help

Brief Answer:
Get proctoscopy or try antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello! XXXX. Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.

It appears that there may be a anal abscess especially when it is painful. I will advise you to visit a gastroenterologist and it can be diagnosed simply with proctoscopy or sigmoidoscopy in which the anal canal can be visualized and examined.

You may also try antibiotics of class quinolones with combination of one of the antibiotics from nitroimidazole class. You can obtain a prescription for these from your doctor. Also take over the counter analgesics like ibuprofen to relieve pain. I hope I have answered your query. Wish you a good helath
