What Does Pin Hole In Percutaneous Endoscopy Gastrostomy Tube Indicate?
Question: My mother has a peg tube. I just discovered there is a pin hole in the tube. Is there a way to replace the tube without further surgery? My mom had the surgery 5 months ago. She is 83 and has dementia.

Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic

Dear Ms XXXXXX
If I am not wrong you meant Percutaneous Endoscopy Gastrostomy tube.
Management will depend on where the hole is located and also on type of tube used.
It would be very helpful if you could provide me the following details
1. Type of tube
2. Location of hole
3. It would be helpful of you could provide me the clinical photograph
Awaiting your response
Take care

It is a peg tube. The tiny hole is located away from the stomach. It is about 2 inches at the bottom of tube. There is a piece that is removable on bottom of tube. It is about 2 inches after that piece is removed.
Is there a way to remove that large tube after the small tube comes off? Does it unscrew in some way? I wanted to know this because I don't want her to have to go through any procedure if possible. It was very stressful the 1st time. Please give me some hope that there is another way of fixing this.

Brief Answer:
It cam be replaced without Surgery
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Greetings
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Once Gastrostomy tube has been inserted , it forms a well formed tract between the stomach and the skin. This is known as maturing of the Gastrostomy stoma. Majority of Gastrostomy tube are self retaining. In the event of any technical failure of tube in form of hole, it van be deflated and replaced back without any surgery.
In my clinical practise I do it as a out patient procedure.
Consult your Physician who will be able to replace it.
Do write back to me for any further assistance.
Take care
Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.
