Question: Am 64 years old and I have had 3 incidents over past 2 and 1/2 years where I have woken up in the morning and could see a shadow above left or right eye, no loss of vision, no other symptoms. First time it happened it was thought to be amaurosois fugax although carotid artery, ecg and brain scan tests all clear. Was prescribed blood thinner and statins. When it happened again same tests came back clear and doctors unsure what it might be and are now questioning if it was a TIA at all. What else could it be?

Brief Answer:
Field defect

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.
This appears to be a vascular phenomenon and since you have already been thoroughly investigated, this goes more in favour of a vascular issue.
You are on the correct line as far as the treatment is concerned. As an ophthalmologist, I don't have anything more treatment to add. But yes, we can add life style management in the form of proper diet, appropriate exercise and rest and yoga for more effective treatment.

Please do get back to us in case of any further query in this regard.

Why is it a vascular issue when carotid artery and brain scan show no problems with arteries? Blood pressure was normal when incident happened. When I pressed on my eye the shadow disappeared but returned when I stopped pressure. Vision not obscured at all. Shadow faded after about 20 mins.f

Brief Answer:
field defect

Detailed Answer:
My dear,

Brain scan and carotid artery clearence do not rule out vascular phenomenon. These tests and scan rule out organic or structural defects. We have seen many cases where vascular phenomena gets reversed before any defects are found on brain and carotid scans. I am talking about condition such as transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) where body clears any blocks or defects before it gets noticed. Yet, treating for such vascular phenomena is essential to prevent future occurrence that might be similar or larger than the ones that occurred in the past.

Continue with the treatment being advised.

Pressure on the eyeball may alter the situation.

Hope I am clear and make sense.

Regards
