What Does Severe Coughing Even After Treatment For Chest Infection Indicate?
Question: My baby is 4 and half months old. He was having cough and cold for more than 1 month and has been prescribed Maxtra and Kufril by his pediatrician. But, there was no improvement and later during further check ups doctor said that his chest is not clear, we consulted another pediatrician and he said that my son is affected from chest infection and henceforth he prescribed antibiotic Nismentin for 10 days along with cough syrup. Now, the antibiotic course is complete and doctor reported that my son's chest infection is healed. But still he is coughing, which we told the doctor , he said no problem discontinue the medicine. Problem is its been 5 days over since his last check-up, but my son is still coughing and yesterday night he cried for 3 hrs continuously, We offered him milk, which he drank for few ml.. then refused. Tried to soothe him but my baby was not happy with any of our efforts and started crying at the top of his voice. He spitted a lot yesterday and passed less urine. The urine color is bright yellow. he did not sleep well and was fussy throughout the night. I thought he was having stomach pain, so gave him collimax and neopeptine as well. But nothing worked. Please advise.
Brief Answer:
antibiotics induced enteritis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
As mentioned by you, the antibiotic course is over.
Amoxicillin is pretty well known to affect bowel bacterial flora
But it is the appropriate medicine for chest infection.
Having given it for 10 days I think his bacterial flora in the intestine would have changed resulting in stomach pain.
I usually recommend probiotic like bifilac twice daily for a week to get relief from this.
Also try giving him oral rehydration solutions like electral and keep giving plenty of liquids.
Continue other current medications.
If no improvement consult your doctor again.
Wishing your child good health.

Thank you very much doctor for your prompt answer.
I would like to ask you few more questions regarding this.
1. You have mentioned to give my child rehydration solutions like electral and keeping giving plenty of liquids. However, the pediatrician we consulted have not recommended any liquid for my child apart from only milk. He said that my child is 4 and half months old, hence no liquid or water can be given to him.. only breast milk or formula will continue till his 6 months of age.
Please advise whether electral or liquid is ok for this age (4 and half mths). By liquid what you meant? Milk ?
2. I gave him collimax yesterday night assuming his stomach pain, but no improvement was noticed.
3. I have mentioned that he is passing less urine and the color is bright yellow. Is it something to worry about?
Thanks again for your help.
Best Regards

Brief Answer:
you can give electral
Detailed Answer:
1. Electral can be given if urine output is less and dark yellow.
No problem. Do continue breastfeeding and formula. Liquids mean formula feeds and ORS.
2. Try bifilac. The pain will take a day or two to settle. Continue collimax.
3. Yes it means input is not adequate. Give ORS and formula in addition to breastfeeding frequently.

Brief Answer:
try cough syrups
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Post infection in the respiratory passages, cough cam persist for one or two weeks.
If very troublesome and associated with vomiting you can try cough syrups.
I would prescribe syrups like ambrolite D 2 ml twice daily for 3 days for such patients in my clinic.
However if fever recurs or if baby develops breathing difficulty consult your doctor again.
