Question: yesterday I noticed a small painful nodule behind my left ear. I applied mild heat and a topical antibiotic. By the morning the pain was gone but the area is not swollen and the top of the ear is numb. My left hand also has some intermittent tingling. What could the cause?

Brief Answer:
Need evaluation....

Detailed Answer:
Hello

It is likely that the swelling/nodule behind the ear would be a swollen lymph node , which is the most common cause for swelling in that region. The most common cause for the swelling of lymph node would be an infection in the ear and scalp. You need to consult a doctor who can look for possible infections here.

Numbness on the ear can be due to the swelling and will subside in 2-3 days.

I would perform a detailed examination and order for blood sugars and tests to exclude infection.

Tingling sensation in the hand is unrelated. It may be related to cervical (neck) spine problems. You can discuss about it when you visit your doctor.

Overall, the symptoms need a physical examination. In the meanwhile you should start vitamin supplements.

Thanks
