What Does The Following HIDA Scan Report Indicate?
Question: Hello,
I had HIDA scan recently using Boost and I had ejection fraction of 46%. I had asked question earlier here and was answered by Dr. XXXXXXX that this is normal. But I need to ask few more questions as I will be going to my GI doctor next month as he has ordered the test to go over the results. Can I ask the doctor about Ursodeoxycholic acid? Last time when we spoke to the doctor he said less than 50% means surgery needed. I just have low to mild heaviness and sometimes it pains not always. So can we talk to the doctor about the medicine you have mentioned.

Yes definitely you can ask the doctor about urodeoxycholic acid.As there is no stone in your gall bladder rather you have sludge and mobility of bladder is also good.You are a perfect candidate for conservative management.
No less then 50% is not a good criteria.Less then 35-40% is followed by most of the standard text worldwide.
yes definitely you can give a 3 month trial to the medication before going for surgery.
Standard trials show that-
UDCA, in pharmacological doses, markedly decreases biliary cholesterol saturation by 40%-60%, by inhibition of cholesterol absorption in the intestine, and cholesterol secretion into bile as indicated by a decrease in the cholesterol fraction of biliary lipids.The recommended dose of UDCA for gallbladder stones is 8-10 mg/kg per day, larger doses do not offer additional benefits.
Some trials have shown urodeoxycholic acid to be as effective as 70% when given for 6 momths.
Though laproscopic surgery is treatment of choice yet if you want to try conservative mangent try it for 6 months intially.
