What Does The Following MRI Report Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: My son had an mri following an injury. It says he has "scattered punctuate of foci of glib sis throughout the peri ventricular and deep hemispheric white matter are present, slightly more than expected for his age". He was inadvertently kicked really hard in the jaw while in the pool with a younger cousin. He has also had several hypoglycemic seizures in the past. Most recent about 10 years ago. What does this mean? Should we be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Probably the cause were seizures.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Punctate foci of gliosis in deep white matter most likely were caused by temporary hypoxemia (lowering of brain supply with oxygen) during the seizures.

Traumatic events may cause also white matter lesions found in MRI ( diffuse axonal injury), but their nature is hemorrhagic, not gliotic in first days to weeks after trauma, so, I don't think trauma caused such lesions.

If no clinical significance ( i.e. your son doesn't manifest neurological symptoms ), you should not worry about.

Just follow up with another MRI after one year is sufficient to be sure about the nature of these gliotic foci.

If there are present neurological symptoms such any limbs weakness, tingling, numbness, vision and speech issues, consulting a Neurologist is necessary.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Kind regards.
