Posted on Thu, 15 Jun 2017
Question: I am 57 and healthy, eat well and exercise every day. I had my first ever colonoscopy yesterday--which revealed what my doctor called "some mild diverticulitis" forming. What's the best thing I can do to keep that in check or make it go away?

Brief Answer:
Dietary modification with a short-term antibiotic course.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.

Most important cause of diverticulitis is taking a low fiber diet. A low-fiber diet can cause problems such as constipation. With constipation, increased pressure gets generated to pass your stool. This increased colon pressure can lead to the development of diverticula.

As per your history, you are mostly having mild diverticulitis.

Initially, oral antibiotic therapy of Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole should be given for at least 14 days(please discuss the dose with your primary physician).

Along with it, a drastic change in life style is required. Not drinking enough water and delaying a bowel movement can worsen such symptoms.

The most important thing in curing is strict adherence to easily digestible fiber rich diet.

Try taking unrefined food such as whole oats, cereals, XXXXXXX lentils; green leafy vegetables, like beans, celery, asparagus, carrot. Try to take a green salad with 1 tsp olive oil daily.

Take ispaghul husk 2tsf at night with half a cup of water. This is a natural laxative adds up to bulk of stool and allows stool to pass easily.

Take probiotic supplements to prevent dysbiosis. Diverticula acts as a stagnation point for food in intestines. This stagnated food is acted upon by numerous harmful bacterial involvement, leading to release of the toxic waste product causing inflammation of diverticula.Hence to outgrow bad bacteria's probiotics should be taken.

Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. Water is a natural lubricant and helps to clear your intestines.

Try to avoid cheese, milk and other dairy products.
Prefer vegetarian food.
Eat lots of fiber rich fruits like pear, apple, and oranges.

Hope my answer would help you.
I wish you a fast recovery.

Regards.
