What Does The Following Thyroid Test Report Indicate?
Recently my wife has done a thyroid test and got the following results:
T3-107
T4-10.8
TSH-3.90
All are within normal limits. Today i read an article which says that recently the upper limit for TSH has been reduced to 2.5 hence anything beyond 2.5 needs medical attention. So thought of taking second opinion is that is the case. Thanks
This is for pregnant women
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.
Less than 5 TSH can be considered normal and above 10 miu/ml is hypothyroidism. 5-10 miu/ml is Subclinical hypothyroidism.
We keep TSH target of 2.5 miu/ml in few situations.
1. Pregnancy - this is the only proved indication to keep TSH below 2.5 miu/ml
Other situations where TSH less than 2.5 is preferred are :
2. Infertility in women - planning IVF or other fertility treatment
3. Thyroid swelling - goitre
4. High cholesterol
5. While on treatment for hypothyroidism with thyroxine.
In her situation if she has completed family, no treatment is needed for TSH of 3.9, especially since her T4 is in higher side of normal.
Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you
