Question: I'm 56yrs old, female. My recent Annual Health Checkup has shown Gall Stones. The report says " The GB is well distended, and shows few Calculi within, the largest is 17mm in size. There is no wall thickening/ pericholecystic collection noted". My Primary Car physician has prescribed a medicine called Ursideoxycholic Acid Tablets IP/ Estuchol 150 for 3 months.

I don't have any pain, nausea, or any symptoms. Should I get Surgery immediately, or wait for 3 months?

Brief Answer:
Hi not to worry and hurry

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for your query.
I understand your concern.
Well it was incidentally detected gall stones on a routine ultrasound. It is usually not recommended to remove the gall bladder by surgery in asymptomatic patients unless you are at high risk of developing cancer which is usually in endemic belts only. It is unlikely that you need surgery immediately.
Also ursodeoxycolic acid offers little help for large stones like this but no harm in continuing it.
If you become symptomatic with pain fever or vomiting suggesting gall bladder inflammation then it may be warranted to undergo gall bladder surgery urgently.
Hope this answers your questions.
Happy to help. Best wishes.

Thank you, Dr Deshmukh. My only concern is would I get a sudden pain attack, vomiting, nausea etc if the stone is not removed?

I have travel plans overseas in May, and so I am worried. Getting the pain while traveling would be quite difficult since I will be traveling alone. Is there any medicine to prevent the pain at least until June?

Hi

Detailed Answer:
Sorry for delay
Yes there is a small but possibility of development of gall bladder pain during your travel.
Unfortunately no medicine can prevent it.
Can carry a course of analgesic and antibiotics n travel insurance on your way.
Best wishes.
