What Does The Following Vaginal Ultrasound Report Indicate?

Question: I thought I was 8 weeks pregnant last period was 28th January 2017. I have no bleeding no pain or anything. I booked an early baby ultrasound scan and the sac is empty. I am really upset. I am overweight and just had abdominal ultrasound. I was told to drink water but the water hasnt filtered through as they scanned me 30 minutes after drinking it can that interfere.with the results? Whenever I have had a scan for anything else it has always been vaginal ultrasound cos of me being overweight. Please help me. have i miscarried

Date calculation is not always precise and there can be variation in the age of pregnancy.

If there is a sac then the possibility of a pregnancy holds good but you surely require a follow up scan to confirm viability of the pregnancy.

At times it is too early pregnancy and therefore the fetal pole is not visualised.

The other alternative would be to go for beta HCG titers and this will confirm an ongoing early pregnancy.

So it doesnt necessarily mean a miscarriage even though sac is empty. I know my period date is right I am really worried. An actual pregnancy test is positive but would it be positive even if it was bad news

It is true that the sac can be empty in early pregnancy and we see this in many patients and get another ultrasound scan done after 1 week or 15 days. The review scan usually shows the fetal pole and cardiac activity.

Even if your period dates are correct, conception is a random event and there can be few days difference between pregnancy age by last menstrual periods and that shown in the scan.

Urine pregnancy test can be positive in viable and non viable pregnancies. Let us hope for the best.

Ultrasound scan is one among the many methods available to follow up an early pregnancy.

There are methods other than ultrasound which can be used to confirm an early pregnancy.
